James Postma, Professor of Chemistry at California State University, Chico, is the 2018 California Section's Walter Petersen Award recipient for Outstanding Service to the local section. He is Chair of the Northern California Subsection and keeps providing a lively connection, in the form of field trips, seminars, lectures, or family science nights, between the subsection and the main California Section. As a most dedicated section member, he has twice been chair of the California Section, and has again been elected as the 2019 chair-elect.

David Ball, professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, was named one of the 2019 inductees in the Chico State Hall of Honor.

David Stachura, associate professor in the Department of Biology, was announced as 2019 Lantis Endowed University Chair. David intends to use the Lantis professorship toward isolating fish mesenchymal stem cells that can be coaxed into producing different types of tissue (muscle, fat, bone, and cartilage). The project will generate a cell line that can make all the cell types of a fish fillet. This research will contribute to understanding cellular reprogramming and will engage students from the local community, Chico High School, and Chico State.

Two faculty members from the College of Natural Sciences were recognized for their exemplary teacher-scholar achievements on our campus. Honorees were chosen by the University Faculty Recognition and Support Committees. Recipients include:
David Keller, associate professor in the Department of Biology. David has received a National Institutes for Health Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) for $353,750 and is a collaborator on a National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation grant for $544,343. He serves as an ad hoc member of the National Institutes of Health, Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology Study Section. In his 10 years at Chico State, he has mentored 40 students. Of 33 lab alumni, 10 have attended doctoral programs, two have attended professional health sciences programs, three have attended master’s programs, one is an instructor, and six are research assistants in biotechnology companies.
Fay Mitchell-Brown, associate professor in the School of Nursing. Fay has extensive clinical and educational expertise in medical surgical nursing, pediatrics, critical care, and case management and quality improvements across the continuum of care. Fay has lived and worked in Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, and across the United States, and has taught a “Global Health and Culture” class with the University Studies Abroad Consortium in San Ramon, Costa Rica, in 2018. She is the faculty mentor for the California Nursing Students Association, mentors and chairs master’s dissertations, and also mentors junior faculty. Her research interests are chronic illness, vulnerable populations, culture, and global health. Fay has seven publications in peer-reviewed journals and has given more than 15 presentations, including papers or posters across the globe. Two recent endeavors are a focus on health care challenges in Ghana and innovative ways to teach nursing clinical through digital storytelling. With over three decades of health care experience, Fay is passionate about engaging students locally and globally.

Center for Healthy Communities receive funding for its food insecurity program, through the California Department of Social Services. This funding will fund efforts from Siskiyou to San Diego counties and involve more than 40 California university and college campuses.

Biological Sciences undergraduate student He-Lo Ramirez was awarded Best Undergraduate Poster at the Botany 2018 meeting, for his poster entitled, “Leaf trait variation in a Quercus lobata common garden experiment is not explained by climatic conditions of maternal seed source”. He-Lo’s research and attendance at the meeting was supported by the CSC² initiative.

Student April Nuestro and Dr. Hyewon Pechkis have been awarded a $975 Women in Physics Group grant from the American Physical Society's Committee on the Status of Women in Physics. This grant is to support the recruitment and retention of women in physics at the undergraduate level, and will provide further funding for Dr. Pechkis's outreach efforts in this area.

Dr. Baseball, AKA Dr. David Kagan, was interviewed on KPCC for a segment on All Things Considered. He talked about the physics of baseball and how it affects the World Series.

Dr. Mark Newton's most recent publication, "Students' Emotive Reasoning Through Place-Based Environmental Socioscientific Issues" has been published in Research in Science Education. This study examined how undergraduate students experiencing place-based SSI instruction in the Great Yellowstone Area expressed emotive reasoning about people and nature impacted by socioscientific issues.

Dr. Nelson has been invited to participate in the Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Keck Center of The National Academies in Washington, DC. "This focus session presents an opportunity for astronomers and astrophysicists to provide critical contributions the Astro2020 decadal survey early in their career. Our goal is for the participants to come away from the event with a deeper understanding of the decadal survey and process, knowing that they have contributed to the current survey, and that they are now equipped to contribute to future decadal surveys in an effective manner."

CSU, Chico's Cener for Healthy Communities is the first in the nation to have a CalFresh Outreach contract with three higher Education systems, mimicking their work on 40 campuses and helping high need students meet their basic needs for improved health and academic success.
