John Knowles, PhD

Dr. John Knowles is an Assistant Professor of Ecohydrology in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Chico State. A native of Maine, he attended Vassar College and the University of Colorado, Boulder where he received his PhD and discovered Ecohydrology as a discipline.  That merged his passions for water and ecosystems.

Most recently, he comes from Tucson, Arizona where he served as a Research Ecologist with the USDA Southwest Watershed Research Center. John has a particular interest in evapotranspiration (ET) and uses a combination of tower and satellite based methods to better understand how changes in ET affect ecosystem services including carbon sequestration and water resources.

He has worked extensively in mountain and semiarid ecosystems and is excited to have arrived in Chico with so many different types of managed and wildland ecosystems nearby. In his personal time, he enjoys time with family and pets, cooking, gardening, and all manner of outdoor pursuits.
