Rebecca Berner, Ed.D

Orientation & New Student Programs Coordinator
Rebecca holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from CSU, Sacramento, a Master's Degree in Communication from CSU, Chico, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Rebecca worked in radio, television and public relations in the San Luis Obispo area before moving to Chico where she taught public speaking courses as a teaching assistant in the Communication Department while pursuing her MA. In 2001, Rebecca was hired by Student Activities as a Program Coordinator for the Campus Alcohol and Drug Education Center. In 2006, she was recruited by Academic Advising Programs to serve as Orientation Coordinator and Academic Advisor which has transformed into her current position as Orientation and New Student Programs Coordinator in Student Life and Leadership. In this role she trains and mentors a staff of over 30 student peer advisors and coordinates orientation programming for over 6,000 participants each year. Rebecca serves on the First Year Experience, Early Start Wildcat Welcome and numerous other campus committees. She also teaches courses in the Communication Arts and Sciences Department including public speaking, small group communication and intercultural communication. Rebecca researched transfer student issues for her dissertation and is especially focused on helping transfers make a successful transition to Chico State. When not orienting, teaching or mentoring, Rebecca enjoys eating and cooking, Saturday Farmer’s market, walking in Bidwell Park, reading almost anything, films, travel, and hanging out and enjoying life with friends, pets and her partner, Steve. Strengths: Communication, Positivity, Input, Collaborator, and Achiever.
