Summer Orientation FAQs

What is Orientation?

Orientation is a one-day program designed to help new students successfully launch their Chico State career and transition to the university. At Orientation, new students will receive guided advising support, register for fall classes, learn about their unique academic path, campus resources, and meet other new students. Attending Orientation will also provide the earliest opportunity to register for fall classes.

How much does Orientation cost?
FREE! The registration fee is being waived for Summer Orientation 2021.
When can I register for Orientation?

Registration for a summer orientation session is open now.

An announcement about the start of registration for orientation was sent to the Wildcat email and personal email on file of all admitted students.

Sessions fill-up quickly. It is best to register as soon as you can.
Is Orientation mandatory?
Orientation is not mandatory but highly recommended.
Should transfer students attend Orientation?

Yes! Chico State will not be identical to your previous institution and there are important items you need to be aware. For example, all transfer students still have at least 9 units of General Education remaining. We will assist in overlapping your remaining GE with applicable major/minor requirements. You will also begin to form relationships with faculty, staff, and career services.

Is Orientation online or in-person?

Summer Orientation 2021 will be completely virtual on. Zoom. You can learn more about how to access and use Zoom here. Please do not come to the Chico State campus to attend Orientation.

How long is Orientation?

Orientation is held from 8:30am to 3:30pm with many breaks throughout the day.  You will be in sessions on general education, graduation requirements, campus resources and registering for classes.

Will I be able to register for classes at Orientation?

Yes. At Orientation we will help you get into the correct set of classes for fall 2021 based on your major. Every student that attends an orientation session will receive a one on one advising appointment with a peer advisor and meet with a major advisor to get help with class selection.

Do I get to meet with an advisor one on one?

At Orientation you will have allotted time to meet with a peer advisor and a major advisor for group and individual questions.

Can I just join in when it is time to register for classes?

In order to register for classes you must be in attendance for the entire Orientation Session.

How do I register for Orientation?

Registration for Orientation is online on our homepage.  To be able to register for Orientation you must first declare your intent to enroll at CSU, Chico. Here is a tutorial on how to complete the registration process.

How do I submit my intent to enroll?

I have unstable Wi-Fi, is it possible to complete orientation another way?

Yes, we can work with you in a variety of ways to complete your orientation session. Contact our office at 530-898-5714 or email us at and we will be happy to work with you.

I'm a double major. What Orientation session should I attend?

We recommend that you choose the major you have more questions about, or which one interests you most. Our staff is trained to help advise any major, so we can always assist with your questions. We also encourage you to make an appointment with your major advisors for both majors after you arrive here in the fall.

Do I need to take the ALEKS Exam?

Have you successfully completed high school trigonometry and high school pre-calculus? Is your major one of the following: Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Geosciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Natural Sciences, or Physics? Can I reschedule my Orientation?

Yes, you can change your session date 3 business days before your scheduled orientation session if the new session date you want is still open.

If I change majors, do I have to reschedule my Orientation?

Yes, you may have to choose a different session date if you changed your major to be able to meet with the right faculty major advisor. To change your major and reschedule please call us at 530-898-5714.

When will I receive an email with more information about my Orientation?

First, you will receive an email confirming your registration and session date. Two days prior to your session date, you will receive additional information and Zoom links. If you do not receive the confirmation email and the emails with the Zoom link to your session, please contact us to verify your registration.

Will there be an Orientation program for parents/guests?
For Summer Orientation 2021, we will be offering webinars throughout the summer months on various topics that will aid parents/supporters to learn about campus resources and  help their students successfully transition to college.
I can't attend the full day. Can I still register for classes today?

Students cannot register for classes unless they attend the full orientation day. Throughout the day we provide valuable and important information to all incoming students that they must attend the full day to have the resources necessary to successfully register for their fall 2021 classes. 

How do I change my major?

Changing your major before classes start must be done through the Office of Admissions. Please contact their office at 530-898-6322 or email to get additional details. If you change majors after registering for an orientation session please contact our office in addition to the Office of Admissions.
