Campus Hazing Transparency Report

In compliance with federal and state law, California State University, Chico is committed to fostering a safe and respectful campus environment. To support informed decision-making and promote accountability, we publish this report detailing hazing violations and disciplinary actions involving student organizations.

This report includes:

  • Confirmed violations resolved through the university’s conduct process within the past three years.
  • Ongoing disciplinary outcomes related to hazing incidents.

Our goal is to provide transparency and empower students to make informed choices when considering membership in student groups.

  • Sigma Chi Fraternity, Kappa Theta Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:   

    Concerns were raised regarding alcohol use during pledge activities and expectations that pledges perform servitude‑based or coercive tasks. Some activities included ice baths involving multiple pledges, which posed health risks. Additionally, there were reports that some members attempted to influence what others said during university interviews, which undermined the integrity of the review process. The chapter also held an unregistered retreat at Lake Shasta, during which pledges did not return when directed by chapter leadership, highlighting concerns about supervision and compliance.

  • Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, Pi Emerging Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:   

    The chapter used a system of “dare sheets” and point‑based challenges that involved tasks described as risky, humiliating, or inappropriate. Alcohol was reportedly present during some pledge activities, and pledges were expected to perform servitude‑type tasks under pressure. Concerns were also raised about limited involvement and oversight by chapter leadership, which allowed these behaviors to continue without adequate checks or guidance.

  • Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Pi Chi Zeta Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:   

    During an organized fraternity event known as “Big Brother Night,” associate members were blindfolded, and alcohol was present and consumed. The event lacked sufficient structure and supervision, which created conditions where students could be placed at risk. Additionally, the event was not registered with the university as required by California law, which exists to ensure transparency and student safety. This failure limited the university’s ability to provide oversight and support.

  • Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Beta Omega Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:   

    A video surfaced showing pledges and members outside the chapter’s annex. In the footage, one pledge was encouraged by others to engage in a disturbing act involving a dead animal, with statements suggesting it was expected “for the fraternity” or “for the brotherhood.” The pledge ultimately complied. This incident raised serious concerns about coercion, humiliation, and health risks, as well as the pressures some students may feel to participate in unsafe behavior to gain acceptance.

    Sanctions placed on the Organization: 

    University recommended contingent suspension and probation for two years. Organization declined, and is now unrecognized for a minimum of 3 years. No suspension with National Headquarters.

  • Sigma Pi Fraternity, Theta Mu Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:   

    Reports showed that pledges were pressured into consuming spoiled milk and alcohol and were subjected to verbal harassment, including language that was discriminatory in nature. In addition, pledges were required to perform physically demanding exercises under stress. The chapter also failed to meet expectations set by both the university and its national organization. Together, these concerns reflect a lack of appropriate oversight and an environment that did not prioritize respect, inclusion, or student safety.

  • Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, California Xi Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:

    The chapter was involved in an activity that included a challenge combining alcohol consumption with unsafe and inappropriate behavior inside a campus building. Additionally, a pledge was physically injured during this process when pierced with a pin. These actions raised concerns about student safety, supervision, and the use of alcohol in situations where students may feel pressured to participate.

  • Lambda Sigma Gamma National Multicultural Sorority, Inc., Mu Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:

    Reports indicated that some members were required to attend late‑night meetings that created physical and emotional strain. These meetings reportedly involved intense yelling, pressure to memorize information under stress, and strict appearance expectations. After concerns were raised, some individuals experienced intimidating behavior both online and in person, which caused additional distress. Members also reported being subjected to prolonged standing, unnecessary tasks, and comments that were personally humiliating or targeted health conditions. These actions raised concerns about emotional safety, respect, and dignity.

  • Delta Chi Fraternity

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:

    An incident occurred at the Delta Chi chapter house involving activities that placed a student’s health and safety at serious risk. As a result, one member experienced a life‑threatening medical emergency and required hospitalization. This situation raised significant concerns about how students were being treated and whether adequate safeguards were in place to prevent harm. The university views this matter as extremely serious because student well‑being must always come first.
