Campus Hazing Transparency Report

In compliance with federal and state law, California State University, Chico is committed to fostering a safe and respectful campus environment. To support informed decision-making and promote accountability, we publish this report detailing hazing violations and disciplinary actions involving student organizations.

This report includes:

  • Confirmed violations resolved through the university’s conduct process within the past three years.
  • Ongoing disciplinary outcomes related to hazing incidents.

Our goal is to provide transparency and empower students to make informed choices when considering membership in student groups.

  • Sigma Chi Fraternity, Kappa Theta Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident:

    General Description of the Violation:

    1. Influencing member statements during conduct interviews.
    2. Alcohol usage during pledge activities.
    3. Servitude and coercive behaviors
    4. Ice baths involving multiple pledges
    5. Unregistered retreat at Lake Shasta, with pledges refusing to return despite directive from chapter president.

    2. Reports of alcohol consumption during pledge activities.

    4. Limited oversight and accountability from chapter leadership during the pledge process

  • Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Pi Chi Zeta Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident:

    Recognized

    General Description of the Violation:

    1. An organized fraternity event (Big Bro Night) occurred.
    2. Blindfolding of associate members was part of the event.
    3. Alcohol was present and consumed by members-pledges at the event.
    4. The environment allowed for potential policy violations due to lack of structured oversight.
    5. The event was not registered with the university, violating California AB 524 (Campus Recognized Sorority and Fraternity Transparency Act), which requires institutions and recognized chapters to report the location, date, and time of any sanctioned event and maintain transparency for member safety and conduct.

  • Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Beta Omega Chapter

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: 

    Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:   

    A video recorded in front of the Phi Kappa Tau annex house shows three pledges and several members outside the residence. One pledge held a dead rat while the other two filmed. The footage depicts a pledge appearing to be coerced—prompted with statements such as “Do it for the frat, do it for the brotherhood”—to lick the dead rat, which pledge ultimately does.

    University recommended contingent suspension and probation for two years. Organization declined, and is now unrecognized for a minimum of 3 years. No suspension with National Headquarters.

  • Sigma Pi Fraternity, Theta Mu Chapter

    General Description of the Violation:   

    1. Coercing pledges to drink spoiled milk
    2. Forcing pledges to consume alcohol
    3. Subjecting pledges to verbal harassment, including homophobic slurs
    4. Requiring pledges to perform strenuous calisthenics under pressure; Additionally Non-compliance with University and National Headquarters

    A “road kill/drink beer” challenge conducted in a campus building. Physical harm through piercing with a pledge pin.

    Recognition Status of the Organization at the time of the Incident: Recognized 

    General Description of the Violation:

    Late-night mandatory meetings with threats and intimidation. Excessive yelling, pressure to memorize history, and uniform dress requirements. Intimidation through social media and in-person gestures after reports were filed. Physical discomfort and fatigue from prolonged standing and unrelated tasks. Humiliating comments targeting personal insecurities and health conditions.
