Degree Programs

The Bachelor of Science in Physics

The Physics Department offers two degree options leading to the B.S. in Physics:

  • The Professional Physics Option: This option is designed to provide students with an in-depth exploration of the key concepts in physics -- from Galileo and Newton to Einstein and Schrodinger. It prepares students for jobs in industry or for graduate study in a variety of fields including physics, engineering, and the natural sciences. You can find the Major Academic Plan here.
  • The General Physics Option: This options is designed to provide students with a strong core in physics as well as the freedom to spend a significant portion of the upper-division coursework in exploring another technical subject or preparing to teach high school. This option is generally recommended for students interested in double-majoring. You can find the Major Academic Plan here.

The Minor in Physics

The Minor in Physics provides students with a solid background in the key concepts of physics. It provide excellent preparation for those interested in strengthing their technical skills or preparing for graduate study in any area of engineering or the physical sciences.

Single-Subject Teaching Credential in Physics

Chico State provides one of only six degree programs in the California State University that is approved for the single-subject teaching credential in physics. This course of study allows students to gain the certification needed to teach high school physics in California, and is in heavy demand.
