How are young people fighting for democracy at the local level?
Join documentary filmmaker Helen De Michiel and special guest, Christian Garcia, for a sneak preview of excerpts from the new documentary Between the Sun and the Sidewalk, which follows two dedicated community organizers, Christian and Aurora.
Meet the Speakers:
Helen De Michiel is a filmmaker, author and independent media leader based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her accomplishments in feature length narrative and documentary, installations, and new media projects have earned her many prestigious awards and fellowships. Her films are included in media collections at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Exploratorium in San Francisco, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. She co-authored Open Space New Media Documentary: A Toolkit for Theory and Practice, and writes on issues in documentary, co-creation, and community engagement practices. She is on the Film Dept. faculty at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Between the Sun and the Sidewalk, her upcoming documentary about youth fighting for democracy in California’s Central Valley, will be released in 2023.
Christian Garcia was born and raised in a farm labor camp in Watsonville, California. He is the first of his family to graduate from college. Christian is the Vice President at Tramutola LLC, California premiere political consulting firm. He has a decade of experience working with a wide range of clients, including cities, healthcare districts, school districts, candidates, statewide propositions, and community health issues. He is a graduate of CSU, Chico with a Double Major in Political Science and Latin American Studies and has a Master’s in Public Affairs from the Goldman School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley.
