About the Speaker:

Professor Hirschfield is the Director of the Program in Criminal Justice and an Associate Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. Paul earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University in 2003. Paul is best known for his work on the expanded criminalization and surveillance in American schools, and racial disparities therein. Currently, he studies efforts to decriminalize school discipline by expanding nonpunitive disciplinary alternatives. He is also focused on variation across regions, countries, and agencies in lethal policing and social and policy responses to it. Paul has been featured for his deadly force expertise on CNN and NPR and in Time, Washington Post, New Yorker, the Atlantic and other major domestic and international outlets.
