Subject: Approval for Non-Teacher Preparation Pattern for BA in Liberal Studies

NON-TEACHER PREPARATION PATTERN FOR BA IN LIBERAL STUDIES

The proposed addition of a non-teacher preparation advising pattern to the BA in Liberal Studies is approved for implementation effective fall 1988. The new advising pattern allows students to substitute a formal minor or major for the 16-17 units of professional prerequisite courses. The revised Liberal Studies program will include the following:

Liberal Studies Major: 103-105 units

Lower Division Liberal Studies Courses: 46 units, same for both advising patterns

Upper Division Liberal Studies Courses: 34 units, same for both advising patterns

Areas of Concentration: 12 units, same for both advising patterns

15-17 units selected from one of the following:

Professional Prerequisite Advising Pattern: 16-17 units

  • PSY012/112 - Learning in the Child
  • PSY041/141 - Socio-Economic and Cultural Diversity
  • HCSV260 - Health Science for the Elementary Teacher
  • EDUC 010A - Introduction to Tutorial Experience
  • EDUC 125 - Curriculum in the Elementary School
  • HIST 152 - History of Education in America
  • or EDUC 102 - Social Issues in American Education
  • PSY 202 - Child and Adolescent Psychology
Non-Teacher Preparation Advising Pattern: minimum 15 units

Completion of a formal minor or major, which must include at least 15 units not contained in the Liberal Studies major requirements.

Completion of the 103-105 unit Liberal Studies major, regardless of the advising pattern, satisfies General Education, Ethnic, Non-western, and Code requirements.
