ACADEMIC CALENDARS
On the recommendation of the Academic Senate and the concurrence of Provost McNall, I am enclosing revisions to the 2002-03 academic calendar.
The change in the calendar for 2002-03, and for future academic calendars, comes as a result of two issues. First, the CSU Board of Trustees has mandated a new holiday, Cesar Chavez' birthday, which is March 31. The holiday will occur on that date unless March 31 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case it will be observed on the preceding Friday or following Monday, respectively. With the loss of an instructional day and a faculty work day due to this holiday, we will discontinue the Monday after Easter as the traditional travel day for our students.
The second change comes in response to the problem of excessive student use of alcohol and the community disruption this sometimes creates during St. Patrick's Day. We are therefore changing our week-long spring break to coincide with the week in which St. Patrick's Day, March 17, falls, effective spring 2003.
