Subject: Executive Memorandum 10-011, Approval for Restructuring of the School of Graduate, International, and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIIS)

Upon the recommendation of the Academic Senate and with the concurrence of the Provost, I approve the restructuring of the School of Graduate, International, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

PART I

Graduate Studies

The Graduate School will move under the Vice Provost for Research, who will serve both as Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies.

Office of International Education

The newly created Office of International Education will serve as the administrative unit for all campus activities relating to internationalization. This unit will report to the Dean of Undergraduate Education and will house all international student services, as well as study abroad and international student advising. The director of the Office will lead the unit and be responsible for campus internationalization, exchange agreements, and related international matters.

In combining international functions in one office, we give greater prominence to the increasingly important role of internationalization and provide a central location and identity for international education. The Office of International Education will provide added visibility to our campus internationalization efforts and will provide an administrative umbrella for all ongoing and proposed new campus-wide internationalization efforts.

Relocation of Academic Programs in the School

With the reorganization outlined above, the academic programs will be moved to the Colleges (see Part II. below), with the exception of the graduate program in Interdisciplinary Studies. It is a flexible program with variable curriculum, and it will continue to be coordinated through Graduate Studies.

PART II

Academic Programs Relocation to the College of Humanities and Fine Arts

The following programs will move from the School of Graduate, International, and Interdisciplinary Studies to the College of Humanities and Fine Arts:

Major in Asian Studies

Major in Latin American Studies

Minor in African Studies

Minor in Asian Studies

Minor in European Studies

Minor in Latin American Studies

Minor in Middle Eastern Studies

Academic Programs Relocation to the Dean of Undergraduate Education

The following programs will move from the School of Graduate, International, and Interdisciplinary Studies to the Dean of Undergraduate Education:

Minor in Leadership Studies (currently under suspension)

Coursework in Interdisciplinary Studies

Undergraduate coursework in International Studies
