Sept. 29, 2016 – Demonstration of Campus Unity

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge powerful moments on our campus this week. Under the leadership of Egypt Howard, African American Student Leaders, and the Chico State Black Faculty and Staff Association, more than 300 members of our campus rallied at Trinity Commons Monday and stood arm-in-arm in peaceful demonstration outside the administration building. It was a community protest in honor of African Americans killed and injured in violence for centuries in America, and in honor of the African Americans who continue to be killed and injured in violence today. This demonstration, which included University Police Chief John Feeney and other senior administrators, was a strong expression of campus unity for our African-American students, colleagues, and friends. To all who stepped outside in solidarity Monday, and at the Black Student Union candlelight vigil on Wednesday night, you have my deep appreciation and support. Chico State values diversity. Chico State stands against social injustice. Chico State is committed to building diverse and inclusive communities of excellence.
