November 6, 2018 – Election Day

Today is Election Day.

Walking past the Bell Memorial Union this morning, I was excited by the energy of people embracing our civil liberties, wearing “I Voted” stickers, walking into the building mail-in ballot in hand, and canvassing for candidates they believe in. Election Day is a time when individuals give voice to hopes and dreams for the future, choose from an array of proposed solutions, and pick those who will represent us in the halls of government. Locally, there are many important issues and seats to be decided, and at the national level political parties who differ in their approach and proposed solutions agree on one thing: that this election may be one of the most important in history.

Chico State is a “voter-friendly campus,” where those who have the right and privilege are encouraged to vote. The BMU is a polling place as well as a drop-off location for mail-in ballots. Polls are open until 8 p.m. The state’s Vote Sure website has a number of non-partisan resources for ballot information, polling locations, and other frequently asked questions: www.sos.ca.gov/elections/vote-sure

We strive to create an atmosphere that values civic engagement and encourages respect for those whose views differ from your own. We believe freedom of speech and respect are not mutually exclusive—indeed, they are an essential part of creating diverse and inclusive learning communities.

In an era where civil discourse is often abandoned in pursuit of individual passion, I want to thank you for determining that this will not be the case at Chico State. Thank you for doing your part as an engaged member of our community.
