October 29, 2018 – Standing together against violence and bigotry

Together, we join with others across our nation and the world to condemn the abhorrent and unacceptable violence that took place Saturday at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. The University flag has been lowered in memory of the 11 Jewish Americans who were senselessly killed in their house of worship.

On behalf of Chico State, I extend our condolences and support to the loved ones of those who were killed, as well as to those in our own community who are affected by this terrible tragedy. No one should have to live in fear—in their place of worship or anywhere else—because of who they are or how they identify.

In order to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone within our community, each of us must play a role in supporting our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Intolerance and bigotry will never stand. Any concerns about disruptive, threatening, or concerning behavior should be reported to the Campus Assessment and Response and Education (CARE) Team, and needs for immediate assistance should always be reported to the University Police Department. All reports of taunting, harassing, or any threats or physical violence will be dealt with swiftly.

As Wildcats, we must stand together to stop violence. In times of uncertainty, we must reach out to connect with and support one another and refuse to condone anti-Semitism and all other bigotry.

Chico Hillel wants all campus community members to know the center is a welcoming environment and has resources available to support them. This week, it will be hosting its Hillel Well Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. at 101 Salem Street, Suite 160, where students can gather for support, discussions, and comforting snacks. Additionally, the Chico Area Interfaith Council is a community resource for interreligious understanding and collaboration, and welcomes anyone to join in its work for education and inclusivity.

For students who need further assistance, the Counseling and Wellness Center has free urgent walk-in services located in the Student Services Center Room 430.
