November 8, 2021 – Taking a Moment in Remembrance of the Camp Fire
Dear campus community,
Three years have passed since the outbreak of the Camp Fire, the most destructive fire in California history. While a great deal of recovery and rebuilding have occurred, the Camp Fire is still a daily reality for many in our community. In Butte County, the fire and its aftermath remain in our collective minds. November 8, 2018, and the tragic days that followed, are an indelible part of our community's history.
Today, we pause to remember the 85 people who lost their lives during the Camp Fire, and the countless others who lost their homes, animals, possessions, and livelihoods.
As a campus, we will hold a moment of silence today, November 8, beginning at 11:08 a.m., to remember, reflect, and hold our community close to heart. Chimes from Trinity Bell Tower will mark the start of this moment of silence, and mark the end, 85 seconds later. For those who may find comfort in sharing this time with others, an informal gathering will take place at the Kendall Hall flagpole as a way to hold space with one another as we mark this solemn anniversary.
The Camp Fire has changed our lives and our community forever. Although the fire left destruction, trauma, and upheaval in its path, the acts of bravery, kindness, and support seen in the months and years that followed speak volumes about the strength of our community.
Please take care of yourself, your colleagues, friends, and neighbors—today, and every day. If you are in need of emotional support for any reason, please reach out to campus resources such as the Employee Assistance Program. Students may be referred to the WellCat Counseling Center, which has 24/7 counseling available.
Sincerely,
Gayle E. Hutchinson
