January 27, 2023 - Message Regarding the Tyre Nichols Tragedy

Dear Campus Community,

The scheduled release of Memphis police body camera footage later today of the death of
Tyre Nichols will mark yet another tragic reminder of the violent acts suffered by African Americans in this country. My heart breaks for the family of Mr. Nichols and for the many other families for whom this tragedy—and the many others before it and since—serves as a reminder of their experiences and what they have lost. This includes members of our own campus community who continue to deal with the racial injustice that plagues our country.

If you have followed the news, you know officials have indicated that the video is disturbing and municipalities across the United States are preparing for justifiable outrage and protests after it is released later today. If you decide to participate in a social justice event, I commend you for standing up for what is right. I do ask that you do so in a manner that is respectful to your peers, colleagues, and our community.

I write this acknowledging that Chico State still has a lot of work to do to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable on our campus. We must continue to work together to bring about progressive social change.

For those who wish to come together to process this tragedy and promote healing, the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center is hosting a healing circle today at 4 p.m. in the Meriam Library, Room 172. All are welcome.

This tragedy, along with the acts of mass gun violence in California against Asian Americans earlier this week, has many on our campus feeling on edge. If you find yourself in need of support, please do not hesitate to reach out to on-campus resources such as The Office of Diversity and InclusionCross-Cultural Leadership Center, WellCat Counseling Services, and the Employee Assistance Program, or one of our many other programs and organizations that support our campus.

Please take care of each other. Be mindful that those around you may be hurting right now and take steps to extend compassion on campus and in our community.

Sincerely,

Gayle Hutchinson
