May 6, 2023 – Gun Violence Near Campus
Dear Faculty and Staff,
I was deeply saddened to wake today to learn about multiple acts of gun violence early this morning in neighborhoods adjacent to campus. According to the Chico Police Department, there were shootings at gatherings near Seventh and Ivy Streets and on Columbus Avenue. Suspects for the incident on Seventh Street have been detained. As of this morning, the Columbus Avenue shooter(s) remain at large. In a press conference earlier this morning, Chico Police said they don’t believe there is an ongoing threat to the community at this time.
Chico PD is the lead law enforcement agency investigating both situations. University Police Department will be closely coordinating with and working alongside Chico PD. If you or anyone you know has information related to these incidents, such as cell phone video, social media discussions, and/or any additional information, please contact UPD at 530-898-5555. You can also file an anonymous tip.
Chico PD also confirmed one person has passed away. While that person was not a Chico State student, I want to express condolences to their family and friends.
Several other individuals were also injured during the gun violence on Columbus Avenue, and while we have confirmed none of the victims appears to be our students, these acts of violence are no less unsettling and traumatic for students, faculty, and staff. Support services are available for all members of our community. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need help.
Students can contact the WellCat Counseling Center by calling 530-898-6345 or emailing counselingcenter@csuchico.edu. If you are in crisis and need to speak to a counselor immediately, please call 530-898-6345 and follow the phone prompts (press 2) and you will be connected to a crisis counselor. Faculty and staff can access help through the Employee Assistance Program.
I’m encouraged by the compassion you have shown each other in the immediate aftermath of these incidents. Please continue to look out for your students and colleagues throughout the weekend. And remember, if you find yourself in a dangerous situation in the area near campus, 530-898-5555 is the fastest way to get assistance from University Police.
We will continue to do all we can to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Sincerely,
Gayle E. Hutchinson
