June 17, 2024 - Survey Identifies Strengths and Areas for Attention as We Move into Action-Planning Phase

Dear Campus Community,
I want to thank everyone who contributed to the 2024 Great Colleges to Work For Survey in the spring semester. The information that you and your colleagues provided will help us continue to identify our areas of strength as an institution and a community, as well as identify areas that will demand more of our attention to meet the needs of students and employees. I deeply appreciate your willingness to provide honest feedback and thoughtful suggestions. I have mentioned many times how I enjoy working here with all of you. Hearing feedback about how you feel working here is going to help us make it a better place.

As first-time participants in the Great Colleges to Work For Survey, our response rate of 33% is good. Your responses have provided a quality dataset for baseline benchmarking, and going forward we will administer this survey every two years. Now we are moving into the post-survey action-planning phase.

What happens next? Modern Think has compiled the data and presented initial survey results and reports to senior leaders, including the chair of Academic Senate. In the fall semester, we expect to begin sharing the survey information, collaboratively developing plans to leverage areas of strength, and addressing areas that will need more attention to succeed. There will be opportunities to gain additional feedback from faculty and staff as we move forward with improvements.

It is important to remember that the survey results will not answer every question and will not solve every problem we face, and it may take time to see needed improvement in some areas. We will be realistic about what we can accomplish in our current environment and prioritize, however, we will also not lose sight of what we want to achieve. We want to be a great college to work for.

Change in any organization takes time, and I do not see this as an exercise only for senior leadership. It is critical to have the active participation of the entire community to help create a positive work culture that will allow our students, staff, and faculty to thrive. I will share more details about the survey results and the action-planning phase at Convocation on August 22. I look forward to working with you as we continue this journey together.
