May 3, 2024 – Condemning Antisemitic Graffiti on Campus

Dear Campus Community,

I’m angry and deeply upset this morning to have received multiple reports of hate-based graffiti and vandalism on this campus. Reports included antisemitic messages in a bathroom, on light posts, and in stairwells on campus. Let me state unequivocally—this cowardly and vile hatred has absolutely no place at Chico State. Facilities and Management Services staff documented and quickly removed the graffiti, and University Police is reviewing surveillance video to apprehend whoever is responsible and hold them accountable.

As I said last night, any and all forms of discrimination are completely unacceptable. Antisemitic harassment and threats to Jewish or Israeli members of the campus community will not be tolerated. This includes vandalism and graffiti.

As our world grapples with war and violence, we must stand as models for the importance of kindness and decency, justice, and equality. We must renounce all forms of hate and violence, and rally together to support people who are impacted. If you see individuals writing hateful graffiti or hear anything about these recent incidents, please contact UPD immediately at 530-898-5555 or you can report a concern or crime online.

Thank you for building a community that rejects despicable acts like this. If you need support as a result of these disturbing incidents, please reach out to the campus services that are here to support you, including the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Cross-Cultural Leadership Center, the WellCat Counseling Center, and the Employee Assistance Program.

Thank you,
Steve Perez
