September 1, 2023 - Tentative Restraining Order Granted Against Professor
Dear campus community,
We learned today that Butte County Superior Court issued a tentative ruling Thursday to grant a permanent workplace violence restraining order (WVRO) against biology professor David Stachura. The WVRO, filed by the University on behalf of four members of our campus community, prohibits Stachura from coming within 300 yards of campus and will be in effect for three years. The order also prohibits him from having contact with these employees and prohibits him from owning or possessing firearms for the duration of the restraining order. He also remains on administrative leave, and the restrictions imposed by the court are in addition to the existing temporary suspension by the University.
I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of our legal counsel and Faculty Affairs and Success for pushing this process forward and offer my sincere appreciation to the four members of our campus community who courageously provided testimony during the trial. As an institution, we will continue to do all we can to support them and ensure they and other employees and students feel safe working and learning at Chico State.
A final ruling is expected from the court later this fall, and we will continue to update our community as needed. Meanwhile, if Stachura is seen on campus, please call University Police at 530-898-5555 and report his location.
Thank you,
President Steve Perez
