Hello Chico State Recreational Sports Student-Athletes!
Recreational Sports is excited to offer Athletic Training services to all of our Sport Club and Intramural Student-Athlete’s. These services include; injury prevention plans, evaluation, immediate care, treatment and rehabilitation for your all your injuries.

Matt Burkett is the Athletic Trainer for Recreational Sports. Prior to taking this position, Matt was a graduate assistant under Head Athletic Trainer Scott Barker for Chico State Athletics. In 2020 Matt transitioned from working with intercollegiate athletics to a full-time position with recreational sports, working with their many sport clubs and intramural student-athletes.
He started his athletic training career at Butte College in 2014 earning his AA in Physical Education, while working as an intern. In 2016, Matt transferred to University of the Pacific, where he received his BS in Athletic Training. He is currently working on obtaining his MA in Kinesiology with an option in Athletic Training from Chico State.
Matt is a Chico local that enjoys hiking, camping, snowboarding and many other recreation activities available here in beautiful northern California. He has also worked with several independent organizations such as, the Marysville Gold Sox and Yuba City Bears baseball clubs.
Mission:
The mission of Chico State Rec Sports Athletic Training Program is to provide Sport Club and Intramural Student-Athletes injury and illness prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation. In addition to on and off the field assistance, the Rec Sports ATP also provides leadership opportunities and administrative services to encourage Student-Athlete development now and into the future.
Program Description:
The Chico State Recreational Sports Athletic Training Program provides health and wellness care for all Chico State Sport Club and Intramural Student-Athletes. Working under the physician’s supervision of the Chico State WellCat Health Center our Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) provides comprehensive, evidence-based health care services.
