Position Announcement—Assistant Soil Scientist

The Soil Health Institute (SHI), a non-profit organization created to safeguard and enhance the vitality and productivity of soil through scientific research and advancement, located adjacent to Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina is seeking an Assistant Soil Scientist. The individual selected will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), performing a wide range of tasks, from administrative to scientific, to advance development of new projects and manage existing projects. The selectee will work closely with the CEO, Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), Chief Operations Officer (COO), and Sustainability Specialist to help transform ideas, needs, and opportunities into projects for advancing soil health. The individual’s work location will be at SHI headquarters in Morrisville, North Carolina; however, a remote location may be considered for the ideal candidate. Salary to be commensurate with experience. This grant-funded scientific position is initially offered for two-years, with potential extension based on funding and program needs.

Duties Include:

  • Assist CEO with daily tasks, short-term projects, and long-term projects for advancing soil health and the Soil Health Institute.
  • Work with the CEO, CSO, and Sustainability Specialist to pursue new opportunities to advance soil health.
  • Strategically design, organize and lead stakeholder input workshops with agricultural groups, food and beverage companies, environmental organizations, scientists, government agencies and others.
  • Contribute Soil Science expertise in the design of Institute research and farmer adoption projects.
  • Develop and write grant applications to address high priority needs and opportunities for advancing soil health, as guided by the CEO and CSO.
  • Bridge SHI research and adoption projects through knowledge of applicable programs and policies conducted by agricultural industry, government, and other sources.
  • Contribute to the SHI team as a disciplinary lead for a specific area of expertise.
  • Communicate findings for scientific and applied audiences.
  • Facilitate/moderate virtual and in-person meetings with partners and stakeholders.
  • Travel as needed for Soil Health Institute representation with partners, stakeholders, and others.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Ecology, Agroecology, Natural Resources or related field is preferred.
  • A Master’s degree in one of the above or related fields is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in transforming research ideas into funded projects is desired.
  • Demonstrated competence in statistical analysis of agricultural studies is desired.
  • Experience in writing for technical and/or popular journals is desired.
  • Demonstrated competence in partnering successfully with a range of stakeholders is desired.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
