Blackboard Instructor Roles Cleanup

A secure online education in compliance with FERPA is of utmost importance at CSU, Chico. With a particular focus on ensuring student privacy in virtual classrooms and gradebook records, the Office of the Registrar in partnership with Distributed Learning Technologies is implementing a phaseout of certain instructor roles in Blackboard.

Blackboard is currently configured such that instructors have a self-service ability to look up and add arbitrary users into Blackboard class rosters. This functionality bypasses institutional controls and potentially gives unapproved persons privileged access such as viewing virtual classroom recordings or editing gradebook records.

In order to protect student privacy in the online environment, instructors will no longer be able to make certain changes in Blackboard and instead must file a ticket to request such changes.

This Blackboard change will take affect starting with the fall 2020 semester, with full implementation expected by spring 2022. More information can be found through this DLT Knowledge Base article on Blackboard Enrollment Management.
