Matthew Stone

Associate Professor

Matthew J. Stone, PhD, CMP, is Associate Professor in Recreation, Hospitality, & Parks Management, where he teaches classes in food and beverage, event, hospitality, and tourism management. Prior to teaching, Matthew spent twelve years as a hotel manager, including positions as director of sales and marketing, director of catering sales, and front office manager with Marriott- and Hilton-branded properties. As a consumer travel expert, Matthew has been quoted by Sacramento Bee, USA Today, Smart Money, and Los Angeles Times. 

He is an international culinary tourism researcher, having completed the world’s largest culinary tourism research study for the World Food Travel Association. His research has appeared in many academic journals, including Tourism Management, Journal of Travel Research, Journal of Air Transport Management, Current Issues in Tourism, and Tourism and Hospitality Research. He is on the editorial board of Tourism Review International and serves as President of the Western Federation of CHRIE (Council of Hospitality Educators) and Vice President of GWTTRA (Greater Western Chapter of Travel & Tourism Research Association). 

He has been a Certified Meeting Professional since 2007. He has also held faculty positions at Prince George’s Community College and University of Houston.
