Temporary Virtual Services

The physical office for the Religion and Public Education Project (RPEP) is closed until further notice and we will be delivering services via online. For questions, please email Bruce Grelle (bgrelle@csuchico.edu).

The Religion and Public Education Project (RPEP) provides general information about the ethical, legal, and educational issues that arise in connection with the topic of religion and public education. RPEP rests on the conviction that the academic study of the world's religions in public schools not only makes an indispensable contribution to historical and cultural literacy, it is also an integral part of education for citizenship in a pluralistic democracy.

RPEP consults with classroom teachers, school administrators, school board members, textbook publishers, academic researchers, journalists, members of the legal profession, and members of the general public in efforts to understand and support public education about religion in ways that are constitutionally permissible and academically sound. RPEP serves as a clearinghouse for resources on a wide range of issues arising in connection with the topic of religion and public education.

Established in 1995 by the Department of Religious Studies at California State University, Chico, the Religion and Public Education Project is non-partisan and serves the needs of schools throughout the United States.
