Confidentiality Explained

Confidential resources are staff or offices on campus that do not have to report sexual harassment, sexual assault, or other forms of sexual misconduct to the university’s Title IX office. These faculty / staff are also considered privileged—meaning that, except in rare situations like immediate danger or legal reporting obligations, they cannot share what you tell them without your explicit permission. These resources on campus are aware of their status.

Confidential Resources On-Campus:

  • WellCat Counseling Center
  • WellCat Health Center (certain medical staff)
  • WellCat Safe Place

Talking to a confidential resource allows you to get support, ask questions, and explore your options. You can talk to us openly and honestly, knowing that your story will remain confidential and will not trigger a formal report or investigation unless you choose to take that step.

Understanding Reporting Obligations

When we hear, “make a report,” it can cause a panic, but what does that actually mean?

At Chico State, most faculty, staff, and student employees are considered mandated reporters and responsible employees. This means they are required to share certain information on disclosures of sexual harassment, sexual assault, or other forms of sexual misconduct to the university’s Title IX office.

These reports are not made to break trust. Often, the intention is to connect you with support and resources. We know it can feel confusing or even frustrating. Below, we explain what these reporting responsibilities mean. Whether you're navigating your own experience or trying to support someone else.
