Summer 2018

[Professional Development]

Dr. Alvarado in collaboration with the multidisciplinary group of CIELO offered a weeklong professional development for K-2 teachers in two-way-immersion programs. We had the participation of teachers, para-professionals and student teachers exploring how to integrate STEAM into their curriculum while supporting the development of multiple languages. 

[Workshop]

Dr. Alvarado in collaboration with Dr. Herrera, from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, participated in the Mini-Corps Institute. The workshop titled, STEM: Working proportional reasoning aligned with NGSS supported with some strategies for tutors who work with migrants in K-12 level.

Dr. Van Dusen gave a plenary talk titled, Statistics and PER’s Sacred Cows at the Foundation and Frontiers in Physics Education Research Puget Sound 2018 conference about how the field of discipline based education could modernize its quantitative research methods. Dr. Newton was nominated for the Myles Tracey Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award for the 2017-2018 academic year.

[Grant Award]
Dr. Van Dusen received $6,000 from the CSU Chico’s Research, Scholarship and creative Activities grant to investigate the best practices in performing large-scale multi-level quantitative education research.

Dr. Van Dusen received $9,907 from the CSU System Lab Innovation with Technology grant to redesign SCED 141 to incorporate new technologies within its labs.

Dr. Alvarado was invited by the Physics Education Research Lab to from Michigan State University to give a Seminar titled, Just Science: Analyzing how we engage in science while we transform the field.

[Grant Funding]

Dr. Alvarado is part of the team of the CIELO Project, a five-year federally funded Office of English Language Acquisition National Professional Development Program. It establishes a partnership between the CSU, Chico Center for Bilingual/Multicultural Studies (CBMS) within the School of Education (SOE) and the Orland Unified School District (OUSD).

[Plenary talk]

Dr. Alvarado was invited to visit Universidad Federico Santa María, in Chile to collaborate with faculty in STEM fields. She also participated in the IV Meeting of Physics Didactics giving a plenary talk and workshops regarding open-ended inquiry as a way to involve students in scientific practices.
