CSU, Chico’s Department of Music and Theatre presents the Chico State Guitar Ensemble’s spring semester concert, Estampas. The performance takes place Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Zingg Recital Hall. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, 530-898-6333.

The focus of this guitar ensemble is classical guitar and classical guitar technique. Students who are part of this ensemble not only have to be able to play the guitar, but also need to be able to read music—a skill not typically required of mainstream guitar players.

The first half of the concert is made up of soloists, duos, and trios performing a variety of classical guitar works. Soloists include Chris Bautista, Brianna Cineros, Tim Goodwin, Jacob Melvoin, and Sage Mitchell.

The featured composition—Federico Moreno Torroba’s Estampas, which means “prints”—will open the second half of the concert. It will be performed by a guitar quartet comprising director Tobin Roye, Chris Bautista, Jacob Melvoin, and Sage Mitchell. They will perform six short movements from the composition that evoke the sights, sounds, and flavors of Spain.

“It’s very beautiful, expressive, and dynamic,” said Roye, a Department of Music and Theatre faculty member. “I was aware of this piece, and felt it was right up our alley.”

Rounding out the concert will be the entirety of the guitar ensemble playing a wide variety of genres, from sultry South American/Latin to lighter jazz pieces, as well as works of different eras, such as classic composers like Domenico Scarlatti to contemporary composers.

“Distinguishing ourselves in our discipline, dedicating ourselves to becoming better musicians, better interpreters of music, is the goal” Roye said.

Tickets, $15 adults, $13 seniors, and $6 students and youth, are available to purchase at CSU, Chico’s University Box Office, 530-898-6333, online at, or at the door.
