CSU, Chico’s Department of Music and Theatre presents The Daniel Hiestand Memorial Concert: Classically Band. The performance takes place Saturday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Laxson Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

This concert is held annually in support of the “Hiestand Music Education Scholarship.”

Being featured in this year’s concert will be the 2018 Marine Band’s March Mania Contest winner, Commando March.  Also, being featured is Leonard Bernstein’s Fanfare and his Danzon in celebration of his 100th birthday. The first half of the concert will be opened by the Chico State Ensemble. The second half of the show will be performed by the Alumni Band.

In 1967, Hiestand assumed the position of director of bands at Chico State College. From this position he was able to influence and have an impact on many students and educators in Northern California. He taught at all levels of publication even teaching at prisons. His strategy was simple: he believed in his students. That is why the “Hiestand Music Education Scholarship” was started in 1992. This provided Chico State instrumental music education majors with a scholarship.

“He listened to us, supported us, befriended us, and let us bloom in our own time,” said Tevis, director of bands at CSU, Chico. “He encouraged us while insisting on our best at all times.  His rehearsals were always a work of art, with music being made during each rehearsal.  He definitely was a teacher’s teacher in the best sense of the words. Those who worked with him continued to ask his advice long after we had left the University. He was always a true friend to his students,” said Tevis.

“Our hope is that the audience will be moved emotionally. Our music reflects many time periods and a broad expressive pallete,” added Tevis.
