California State University, Chico’s School of the Arts presents the organ recital, A Rothe Celebration, Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. on the Harlen Adams Theatre Stage. This concert celebrates university organist and music professor emeritus David Rothe’s 80th birthday. Concert attendees will receive a free copy of Rothe’s critically acclaimed CD, Bach Organ Favorites (one per family). Tickets are available at the University Box Office, 530-898-6333.

“A variety of great music will be played by great performers on great musical instruments,” said Rothe.

Rothe will be performing several Baroque compositions, as they are well suited for the Baroque style Centennial Pipe Organ. He will play Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Rothe will also accompany Daun Weiss (soprano), Ayako Nakamura (trumpet and flugelhorn) and a small choir on several pieces by Bach, Handel and other Baroque composers.

In addition to Rothe, Weiss and Nakamura,  performers will include Ryan Enright, Kevin Anderson, Helen Mendenhall, John Nunes and Jeff Cooper (organ); Robert Bowman and Bradley Martin (piano); and Chris and Jack Bradshaw (duo piano). This variety of performers (some of whom are Rothe’s former students) will be playing a variety of music, including a ragtime piano duo and compositions from Bach, Handel, Bender, and Enright.

“I expect the audience will take away a happy feeling and the knowledge that they have heard some great music played by fine performers on one of the best organs in the United States,” said Rothe.

Currently, Rothe plays the organ and directs the choir every Sunday at two churches. He also performs at CSU, Chico every season in organ recitals and the Glorious Sounds of the Season concert.

Tickets, at $15 adults, $13 seniors, and $6 students and youth, are available at CSU, Chico’s University Box Office, 530-898-6333, online at and at the door.
