Biography

As a veteran mathematics teacher and lifelong learner, Debbi has designed and implemented lessons that engage students in learning while meeting their individual needs. Using ELD strategies such as thinking maps and Constructing Meaning, her students learn and use content language to depend their conceptual understanding. In her nearly three decades as a secondary mathematics teacher, Debbi has refined classroom management that promotes student autonomy and mutual respect, thus maximizing learning. As an instructional coach, she facilitated professional development for all math teachers and worked to help individual teachers build their capacity through coaching cycles. In working with multiple grade level teachers as a district mathematics lead, she assisted in strengthening vertical alignment of curriculum to ensure that students master grade-level standards while also building upon mathematical thinking. By using educational technology platforms such as Pear Deck, Google, PheT, Illustrative Mathematics, Padlet, DESMOS, and others, Debbi has enriched her lessons by connecting students to real-world mathematical applications in engaging ways. Debbi's current university supervisor position has given her the opportunity to share her instructional knowledge with candidates to help them develop research-based strategies during their practicum experience.
