Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) and Subject Matter Requirement (SMR)

The information on this page is for those applying to the Chico State Credential Program and Chico State students in the Pupil Personnel Services – School Psychology (PPS) and Speech Pathology (SPL) Programs.

Chico State Credential Program

  1. Completion of the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) is required prior to program admission. A list of options for satisfying the Basic Skills Requirement may be found at the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) website.(opens in new window)
  1. After reading the Basic Skills Requirement at the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) website:(opens in new window) If you are choosing #7 or #8, then proceed to mark “General Education Coursework” from the drop down on the credential application. 
  1. If you are using general education coursework, or a combination of exams and coursework, you will need to complete the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) Form (PDF).
  1. SUBMISSION: Once the form is completed you will attach it to your credential application.
  1. This does not guarantee you meet BSR. Once you have submitted your credential application, we will evaluate your BSR form and notify you through your Chico State email if it has been approved. If not approved you will be required to pass the CBEST prior to program.  Please refer to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) website(opens in new window) for additional options to meet the basic skills requirement.
  1. We do have courses that have been pre-approved to meet BSR. Please review the Basic Skills Approved Courses (PDF). If a course from another college has been substituted for one of the pre-approved courses you must list the course completed, not the pre-approved course.

Pupil Personnel Services – School Psychology (PPS) and Speech Pathology (SPL) Programs

  1. Review #1 and #5 above
  2. If you are using options #7 or #8 from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) website(opens in new window), you will need to complete the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) Form (PDF)
  3. SUBMISSION: Once the form is completed, email it to credentials@csuchico.edu
