Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) and Subject Matter Requirement (SMR)

Basic Skills Requirement

The information on this page is for those applying to the Chico State Teaching Credential Program and Chico State students in the Pupil Personnel Services – School Psychology (PPS) and Speech Pathology (SLP) Programs.

PPS and SLP must have BSR on file before being recommended for their PPS/SLP credential. The form can be emailed to credentials@csuchico.edu, check below regarding Basic Skills.

Teacher Credentialing Program Candidates

Completion of the Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) is required prior to Teacher Credentialing program admission.

Basic Skills Requirement
From the options below, please include ONE item for Basic Skills in your application:

  1. Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) Form (PDF) - This form may be used by all applicants to verify that that you have met the Basic Skills Requirement. 
    • Approved Courses for BSR (PDF) - A list of courses from Chico State and local community colleges that can be used to fulfill the Basic Skills Requirement. 
  1. OR Score report from appropriate exam if not using any college coursework for this requirement. Attached the score report to the application.

Subject Matter Requirement

From the options below, please include ONE item for Subject Matter Competency in your application:

  • SMC using Academic Major Form (PDF) - This form may be used by students who are applying to the Multiple Subject, Single Subject, Education Specialist, Concurrent, or Bilingual programs whose academic major is the same as the content area for their credential. A breakdown on subject to degree (PDF) to meet SMR OR
  • A letter verifying Subject Matter Competency from another university - Must be signed by a CTC-approved signor. OR
  • CSET Score Report to the same as the content area for their credential.
