 Happiness...pass it on!

Welcome to the new academic year and I hope that it has been smooth sailing for all of you.

On behalf of Staff Council, I am delighted to welcome President Gayle Hutchinson to campus. We look forward to working with her to improve our campus in the spirit of transparency, trust, respect and shared governance.

This is an exciting time at Chico State.  Change has arrived and now that it’s here we have choices before us. We have the choice to embrace it and move forward to create our own happiness. We have the  opportunity  to establish a positive and inclusive environment.  Now is the time to eliminate self-serving behavior and an “us against them” mentality and work toward one purpose, one campus, one university.  We are stronger working together.  So let’s do it.

A new sign in my office reads, “Please take responsibility for the energy you bring into this space”, a quote by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. Well, “this space” is our campus. Nothing around us will change until we change what goes on within us. The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. So why not choose happiness?  Let go of negativity and “glass half empty” outlook.  Remember, the glass is always refillable.  Let’s choose happiness (or fake it till you make it).   Happiness and kindness are not overrated, they’re simply underused. Respect other people’s way of thinking. Be kind to each other and to yourself and be happy.

Let’s have a great year!
