About the Creek

Creek bridge with green foliage

Whether you’re strolling on campus or rushing to Holt Hall, you’ve glanced at the creek that flows through campus. Big Chico Creek originates from Colby Mountain and travels 46 miles to its confluence, the Sacramento River. The creek is home to a variety of species including trout, salmon, and river otters.

Erosion Control

A rising issue is the erosion occurring in Alumni Glen that is causing sediment to be released into the creek. This is detrimental to the plant life trying to live on the creek bank because the ground is too loose for the roots to anchor. The erosion is also degrading the bank and making it wider.

Creek Etiquette

The creek has a fragile bank and needs to be handled appropriately. We kindly ask that you refrain from littering and step away from the creek bank. Continuous trampling on the bank will disrupt the sediment and erode our beautiful creek. Stepping on the creek bank also damages
plant life that are crucial for erosion control. Green Campus strives to improve our community in a sustainable and safe manner. Please appreciate the creek from a safe distance.
