School of Social Work

Message from the Director

Never work just for money or for power. They won't save your soul or help you sleep at night.

Welcome to the School of Social Work at Chico State University.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the next decade will see a significant growth in the need for professionally trained social workers.  We know that the scarcity of affordable housing, a growing older adult population, and the many implications of income inequality will place increasing demands on our communities – necessitating smart, innovative and skilled social work interventions.  Thus, if you are considering a career in social work, you’ve come at the right time – we are going to need you.

The School of Social Work at Chico State offers an undergraduate degree (BSW) in Social Work as well as a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) which may be completed in a one-year, two-year or three year program.  Our Programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education(opens in new window) and include practical training and supervision in the field. We have a particularly strong training program in Child Welfare as well as a Distributed Learning Program, which allows students to take courses largely on-line with periodic visits to campus for in-person instruction.

While our students come from around the country and across the State, we have a special focus on our 18 County Region (PDF) in Northern California.  This largely rural area offers unique opportunities and challenges for social work and the University and we are proud to be serving our North State communities. Our faculty, students, staff, and alumni have strong ties to our northern California communities, social service agencies and institutions resulting in our strong reputation across the North State. Faculty and alumni are involved in numerous activities in our service region, including research, training, advocacy, advisory board membership, and consultation. Students benefit from faculty commitment to and involvement in these endeavors through both field placements and guided student community projects in cooperation with our agency partners.

As a student you will find an incredibly dedicated group of faculty who are deeply committed to teaching and learning here at Chico State. We offer classes by both fulltime and part-time faculty – all of whom are working in the field.  As a result, we have a high retention rate among our majors. In addition to quality teaching, faculty and staff provide exceptional academic and professional advising, and are highly successful in advocating for social work majors for campus-wide awards and scholarships. Social work classes promote strong student-faculty ties and opportunities for mentoring, professional identification and development. The teaching and learning opportunities available throughout the northern California region motivate our students to quickly develop leadership skills and find careers in highly dynamic and innovative government and non-profit organizations across the State and beyond.

We welcome your interest in social work – a field we have found to be incredibly rewarding and meaningful. Please visit the various pages on our website for more information.  If you are a potential student, faculty member, field instructor, or advisory board member, we look forward to connecting with you.

See you soon,
