Who I Am

I was born and raised here, in Chico, CA, and have two younger brothers. I was lucky enough that my parents broke down the barrier of being the first in their families to go to college, so I grew up with the expectation that my education would continue after high school. That being said, I also grew up knowing the only person who would be funding my education was ME, so I started working at age 14 to save money for college, as well as to help my mom with bills. I knew I wanted to go somewhere new and explore, but I didn’t know how I was going to pay for it. When I was looking at schools, my number one priority was cost, and I didn’t have the great resource of Upward Bound, so I didn’t even apply to my dream school of UC Santa Cruz because I didn’t think I could afford it. I landed at CSU Channel Islands, the newest CSU, in Camarillo, CA. Honestly, I really struggled until I got involved with a program called the “University Experience Program,” which was a peer mentorship program that supported freshmen like me, who didn’t know much about how to be a successful college student. I was mentored, and then worked for the program as a peer mentor until I graduated. Through the support of the program, I was able to develop my own major, as well as study abroad in Germany for a year. I worked an average of 3 jobs at a time while in school, and it made me a very hardworking person who does not take education for granted. I graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Gender Studies and a minor in Global Studies.

 What My Interests Are

My favorite thing in the world is live music. While working for Upward Bound is a dream job, being a tour manager for a band would be my ultimate dream job if skills didn’t matter. As someone with zero musical talent, I’ve always been amazed by people who can get on stage and share their talents with others. I am constantly looking for new music recommendations, so send em my way! When I am not at concerts, I enjoy cooking meals with and for my friends, and spending time with my family. I am very lucky that my mom, brothers, and grandmother still live in Chico so I can see them pretty regularly! I am also a total nerd who loves learning new things! There are so many interesting things and ideas in the world, and I love listening to podcasts and reading.

Why Upward Bound is Important to Me

There are many negative messages out in the world that tell students they can’t go to college or be successful, but those negative messages aren’t true! UB fights hard to make sure that those lies are shut down, and proudly broadcasts the message that you can and will go to college. UB is important to me because it’s spreads the message of community, hard work, and that students like you are more than capable of getting an education that you deserve. I know that I would have benefitted so much from UB as a high schooler, and providing whatever I can to help students get to college is a very special honor and privilege. I am extremely passionate about making the world a more equitable and inclusive place, and I believe education is the way to do it!
