Thanks to a generous donation from Richard Watters (Lindhurst High School Class of 2017), a Chico State Upward Bound alum, we established the Chico State Upward Bound Scholarship Fund in 2024. In just two years, we have awarded eight scholarships to incredibly deserving Upward Bound seniors as they embark on their college journeys.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for consideration for an award the applicant must:
- Be a graduating senior and a participant in Upward Bound at CSU Chico
- Have a grade point average of 2.5
- Be enrolled in a two-year or four-year university in the fall following graduation
Must Provide
Please provide a personal statement or essay of no more than 250 words for each of the following prompts:
- Describe your college and career aspirations and how you plan to achieve them.
- What motivates you to pursue your goals, and how do you stay focused on them?
- Share a significant challenge you've overcome and how it has contributed to your personal growth.
- How has Upward Bound helped you grow emotionally and mentally?
Please provide the name, title, phone number and email address of someone who knows you well and can speak about your background. It can be your Upward Bound advisor, a teacher, coach, mentor or counselor. The scholarship committee will reach out to this individual.

Message to Donors
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college. The program provides academic support, college and financial aid application assistance, a six-week residential summer program, college visitation trips and individual advising. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college.
We welcome and appreciate donations, as it will allow us to award more annual scholarships and help our students accomplish their goal of earning a college degree. The primary purpose of the Fund shall be to provide a scholarship to Upward Bound graduating seniors who are seeking to pursue higher education.
