Academic Programs Limited Return to Campus Provisions

June 23, 2020
Debra S. Larson, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Faculty,

The document Academic Programs Return to Campus – Summer 2020 (PDF) provides a process for a limited return to faculty offices, other instructional and research activities, and Academic Affairs support units, during summer 2020. Please read the document carefully, and follow its provisions if you need to return to campus. With this process, we will work to meet the University’s goal of minimizing the number of people on campus at any given time. Deans will only approve activities for which faculty have made compelling arguments that the activities cannot be effectively and efficiently completed remotely.

Faculty may return to their offices only for limited purposes and duration. Anyone returning to campus must first complete training (available soon) and follow all other provisions of the aforementioned document. If the conditions are excessively limiting, please let your dean know; we anticipate that this process will evolve as it is implemented.

Any other faculty use of academic workspaces (research labs, studios, instructional development in classrooms) will require the user to first request permission from the dean, followed by the completion of a risk assessment for the activity (using the template in PART 3 Return To Campus Request for Academic Instructional/Research Space Risk Assessment.pdf (PDF)). In many cases, department chairs will need to participate in the risk assessments, especially for classroom spaces and involvement of support staff.

We do not anticipate that departmental and deans’ office staff will return to campus prior to the start of the fall semester. Additional guidance will be provided as the fall semester approaches.

Special thanks to Deans David Hassenzahl and Angela Trethewey, as well as the EOC, for their leadership and efforts in quickly developing this plan.
