Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Appointment of Interim Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts

June 11, 2018
Debra S. Larson, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

We have completed the search process for an interim dean for the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. I am pleased to announce that Professor Tracy Butts has accepted the interim position. She will step into her new role on June 18, 2018.

Dr. Butts has been a member of the English Department since 2001 and has been department chair since August 2015. Her commitment to diversity and support for students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds are difficult to match. In addition to teaching a full course load, in 2014 she served as the interim associate dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Over the years, she has played a critical role in working with and mentoring students, serving as faculty advisor for the multicultural sorority Lambda Sigma Gamma and mentor for the Educational Opportunity Program’s Summer Bridge program. She has also served as director of the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies and as Chico State’s chief diversity officer, among many other service activities. Butts holds a doctorate degree in English from the University of Georgia and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English and liberal arts and sciences, respectively, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Butts on her selection for this important leadership role at Chico State.

I want to thank the search committee members (Joe Alexander, Sarah Anderson, Stephen Lewis, Brad Martin, Asa Mittman, Laura Nice, Ed Pluth, April Whitley, Saundra Wright, and Zanja Yudell) for coming together and moving through the process quickly. I truly appreciate their commitment, time, and professionalism during the search process.
