Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Notice of Intent to Hire, Reorganize, Promote or Reassign - Kate McCarthy

May 17, 2019

We would like to take this opportunity to clarify the Notice of Intent. In earlier consultation with the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate and recent discussions with EMEDC, this is a special process created for this particular Notice of Intent.

The Division of Academic Affairs is recommending the appointment of Kate McCarthy as the Dean of Undergraduate Education at Chico State. Dr. McCarthy has been working on our campus since 1994 in a variety of roles, including: professor in the Department of Comparative Religion & Humanities (1994-present), Interim Director of Faculty Development (2014-15), Chair of the Department of Comparative Religion & Humanities (2016-17), and Interim Dean of Undergraduate Education (2017- present).

In addition to oversight of the First-Year Experience Program, the Chico Student Success Center, the Honors Program, and the Office of Civic Engagement, McCarthy has taken the lead on Graduation Initiative 2025 efforts on our campus and coordinates the implementation of Executive Orders related to general education and academic preparation.  McCarthy chaired the Curriculum Advisory Board (2012-14), and has served on many campus committees, including but not limited to: Lantis Committee (2017-present), University Writing Committee (2017-present), Campus Fee Advisory Committee (2017-19), Diversity Studies Pathway Coordinator (2011-14), Faculty Recognition and Support Committee (2014-15, 2016-18), Academic Assessment Committee (2014-15), and General Education Implementation Team (2010-12).  She has also made additional contributions to the campus and community through frequent presentations on religious diversity and political polarization and civic dialogue.

McCarthy holds a PhD from the Graduate Theological Union (1994), a MTS from Harvard Divinity School (1996), and a BA from Colgate University (1984).

In consideration of the critical importance of this role and the proven leadership skills of Dr. McCarthy, the intent is to transition her to the Dean of Undergraduate Education position at Chico State. Before moving forward with a direct appointment of this individual, we are seeking input from the campus community.  All feedback should be submitted to on or before June 6, 2019 (extended deadline). All input will be given serious consideration prior to deciding whether to move forward with this appointment. The feedback will be monitored by Sheryl Woodward, Associate Vice President of Human Resources, who will register all responses in a confidential manner.  The AVPHR will provide the Provost with a report of all feedback redacted to maintain anonymity, as allowed within the context of the law and best practices in personnel matters.

While all relevant feedback is welcome, feedback specific to the following is encouraged:

  1. Your experience and/or observation of this candidate’s ability to build and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with campus stakeholders;

  2. Your assessment of the candidate’s contributions in the interim role, providing specific examples when possible; and,

  3. Your assessment of the candidate’s ability to develop and implement departmental strategic improvements.
