What is Canvas
Canvas is the learning management system where students find the content provided by their instructors of their past and present classes. Faculty use Canvas to deliver the content modules, assignments, grades, activities, discussion boards, groups, tests/quizzes, and a lot of other things for the students to navigate through their course work. Whether you are a freshman, transfer, or a current student, learn more about navigating Canvas by enrolling in Getting Started with Canvas(opens in new window).
Using Canvas - The Basics
- Access Canvas on laptop or desktop
To login to Canvas, go to canvas.csuchico.edu(opens in new window)
Once the page opens, you will be prompted to login with your Chico State Credentials.
Then you will be prompted to verify through Duo.
- Access Canvas on Student App
Canvas Student allows students to access their courses and groups using a mobile device. Students can submit assignments, participate in discussions, view grades and course materials. The app also provides access to course calendars, To Do items, notifications, and Conversations messages.
Canvas Student requires a Canvas account and is available for both Android and iOS devices.

- Ally for Students (Download Course Materials in Alternative Formats)
Video Tutorial
Outside of Blackboard, you can use the Blackboard Ally File Transformer(opens in new window) to test how BB Ally works or transform any documents to one of the many file options (i.e. audio files, HTML, translated, etc.)
Written Tutorial
Students will see a Download arrow next to the file to be viewed.
Click on the download arrow to see other options for that document.
As the student chooses Alternative Formats, another screen will appear giving further options.
The student clicks on the best format for their needs, then clicks download.

You might not see every alternative format in your list of choices to download. The formats generated depend on the original content type.
