ResNet DMCA Notice Resource Page
This page contains procedures and documents that are involved in ResNet DMCA enforcement. Please email resnet@csuchico.edu with any questions.
The process, in general
- The university receives a notice from a copyright holder (e.g. The MPAA, the RIAA, Sony/Columbia).
- Student Computing determines the owner of the computer that was sharing the files and the following actions are taken:
- The computer is removed from the network.
- An email is sent to the student's WildcatMail account. The student's RCC and the Coordinator for Residence Hall Student Conduct are sent a copy.
- Student Computing files an Incident Report in the UHFS Incident Reporting system.
- At this point, it is the resident's responsibility to complete the remediation steps him/herself, or schedule an appointment with a ResNet technician for assistance.
- Two things are needed for the resident's computer to be reconnected:
- An email sent to resnet@csuchico.edu by the resident per the remediation instructions that were emailed to the resident.
- Verification by the resident's RCC or ARCC that a conduct meeting has taken place (an email to resnet@csuchico.edu will work fine).
- Once those two pieces of information are received, the resident's computer is allowed back on to the network.
- Repeat offenses result in an indefinite loss of all network privileges and the resident is referred to the Coordinator for Residence Hall Student Conduct.
Related documents
- Reminder Mailer/Email:
The reminder mailer and email that is sent to all residents when they move in and periodically during the school year.
- File Sharing Advisory:
This is being mailed to each resident along with the reminder mailer. A link to it is included in the message as well. An earlier version of this document was sent to all residents and their parents in early-August as part of the Are You Ready For ResNet? packet.
- Violation Notice Email:
The email sent to a student when their computer is taken offline.
- Example DMCA Notice:
An example of the notices that the university receives from copyright holders. Student Computing uses the IP address and timestamp in the notice to determine which computer was sharing the files.
- DMCA Maintenance Waiver:
If a resident requests help from a ResNet technician with removing file-sharing programs, the resident will be required to sign this waiver.
