Cascade Training Outline

Cascade Training for 3.0 Site Editors — Beginner

  • Introduce self and what we will cover:
      1. Quick overview of accessibility
      2. Overview of the Campus Web
      3. Get into Cascade to create our own pages
      4. Pass out Site-Maintainer's Agreement
  • Security:
      1. Do not store level 1 data documents in Cascade nor in webpages.
      2. Cascade is not a file storage depository, use Box to store files.
      3. Always logout of Cascade.
  • Accessibility
      1. Accessibility is helping people with disabilities use the web
        1. visual
        2. auditory, speech
        3. physical
        4. cognitive
      2. Section 508 - the law dealing with accessibility on the web
        1. government-funded, public-facing institution responsible for complying with those federal requirements
      3. We’ve built in the pieces that we can
        1. Example: skip to main content
        2. Self file extension label
      4. A couple of pieces that apply to you:
        1. Provide Alt text
        2. Use Youtube and provide captions
        3. Using table summaries
        4. Consider color-blindness–print your pages in black and white
      5. Beyond Accessibility
        1. Universal Design approach
          1. creating an experience that’s accessible for many types of users, including those of varying ages, with varying abilities and education
          2. Ex: automatic door - wheelchairs, delivery, parents with strollers
        2. Write content in a logical way
          1. Use headings and break into sections
          2. Don't write long blocks of content - break it up with lists
          3. People don’t read, they scan
        3. Mention frequent mistakes
          1. Ambiguous link text
          2. Missing alt tags
          3. Missing title tags  
      6. Remember, you are responsible for the content you put on the web!
        1. Provide Accessibility Resources (Knowledge Base)
        2. Demonstrate how to submit an accessibility service request ticket

      1. Turn on computer and log in
        1. open a browser (NOT ie)
        2. go to wwwdev.csuchico.edu/training-8/
          1. Explain dev server
          2. Go over the anatomy of a webpage
      2. Branding (Global header & footer )
      3. Side-nav menu
      4. Dept info
      5. Announcements, features, events
      6. Sections
      7. Pages (Primary & Secondary content)
      8. Cards, widgets, buttons, regions

      1. Go to https://wcms.csuchico.edu/ and log in
  • Cascade Server Interface
        1. Dashboard
          1. My sites
        2. Top bar and Side nav
          1. Go to a Site (left side)
          2. My Content (right side)
          3. Under letter of name > History (same as My content)
          4. Demonstrate how to log out
        3. Folder Tree
          1. A website is a bunch of files and folders (show sample site folder, section folders, and pages).
          2. Select a folder
            1. Screen shows all files and folders within the selected folder
            2. show tabs across the top - things we can do to the item we’ve selected

  • Prepare and Upload Content
        1. Images (Site Assets > Images)
          1. Small card Image
            1. Add Content > Image File > 135px width
            2. Large card 467px width
        2. PDF form - documents (Site Assets > Documents)
          1. First, always check for accessibility
          2. Add Content > PDF File (external)
          3. Extensions are important - leave them there
  • Copy Page
        1. System Name - No spaces, caps, or special characters
        2. Parent folder is where it will save
        3. Edit page - Review content tools
  • Create New Section

        1. Edit index page each section needs an index file
  • Create Section Pages
        1. Create basic page
          1. Add Content  > Pages > Basic Page (application, awards, schedule, video, )
        2. Application page

            1. Go over how to write effective link text
            2. Internal - same window
            3. External - new window (Add Content -> Misc -> External)
            4. PDF
              1. External - new window
            5. Second Content item:
              1. Add card with PDF
              2. Add button with PDF
        1. Schedule
          1. Add Content > Pages > Basic Page
          2. Table - add summary on save/submit
          3. Hide the secondary content
        2. Awards
          1. Add Content > Pages > Basic Page
          2. Create tile widget
          3. Create card across page
