Noted music producer and California State University, Chico alumna Sylvia Massy will speak at the University on December 1 as part of an event sponsored by CSU, Chico’s student-run SOTA Productions.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at CSU, Chico’s Performing Arts Center, Room 134, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Anita Rivas, a faculty member in the Department of Music and Theatre, will moderate a Q&A with Massy, who will then answer questions posed by members of the audience.

Massy is a producer, engineer, musician, writer and artist who is passionate about finding unconventional and inventive ways to create music and manipulate sound.

Massy attended CSU, Chico’s Communications Studies program from 1978–81.

Now operating her own studio in Ashland, Oregon, Massy is also the author of Recording Unhinged: Creative and Unconventional Music Recording Techniques. That book details her concept of “adventure recording,” or finding unique ways to record sound, including recording through a garden hose.

She has been awarded 25 gold and platinum records for her work and has been involved with albums from artists including Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool and Built To Spill.

Along with record producer Rick Rubin, Massy engineered and mixed the Johnny Cash album Unchained, which went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 1997.

After working with big name acts in Southern California, Massy moved to the North State and opened a studio in Weed, California, where she continued a string of domestic successes and also produced several international hits for bands from Australia, Norway and Portugal.

More information about Massy can be found on her website.

SOTA Productions is the practical learning and student-run component of the Department of Music and Theatre’s Music Industry Program, and is designed to teach students business skills and how to organize, manage, network, promote and produce actual live shows and events.
