To raise awareness and support the children who lose their hair during chemotherapy and radiation treatment, California State University, Chico students will shave their heads next week at the Bald Is Beautiful fundraising event Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Trinity Commons.

The event is a lead-up to Up ‘til Dawn, the largest student-participation fundraiser held on campus. Up ‘til Dawn, scheduled for Nov. 4 this year with the theme Carnival for a Cure, benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Bald Is Beautiful will include the sale of a burger, chips and a drink for $5, with proceeds going to St Jude. There will also be interactive games and free giveaways for participants. Carl’s Jr. is a sponsor of the event.

Student organizers of Up ‘til Dawn and other volunteers will have their heads shaved at the event, which has been held on campus since 2010. The event won an award from St. Jude in July. CSU, Chico students got the idea for the event after touring the St. Jude hospital in Memphis and visiting children who had lost hair due to cancer treatments.

Student Ian Gilbert, associate director of Up ‘til Dawn this year, said organizers hope Bald Is Beautiful is a successful prelude to Up ‘til Dawn. “We are looking to bring momentum to this year's event to create Up 'til Dawn buzz and excitement on campus,” Gilbert said. “The Up ‘til Dawn board has set lofty goals to raise $200,000 and have 4,000 people attend this year.”

Since CSU, Chico students began participating in Up ’til Dawn in 2000, they have secured nearly $1.4 million in donations for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital – more than any other participating college or university.
