‘Food Day’ Celebrates Healthy, Affordable Food Choices Oct. 24

Slated for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Selvester’s Café, the event will highlight healthy eating habits through cooking demonstrations, food tastings, a scavenger hunt, raffle prizes, food-related discussions and film screenings. Emily Koller, the region’s first representative from FoodCorps, a service organization, will discuss her work educating children about “real food.”
The day will conclude with a screening of the documentary, “A Place at the Table,” at 6:30 p.m. in Holt 170, followed by a discussion panel moderated by Kathryn Silliman, chair, Department of Nutrition and Food Science.
In its third year, Food Day is a nationwide celebration of healthy, affordable and sustainable food and a grassroots campaign toward better food policies. The movement builds year-round and culminates on Oct. 24. This year’s event, hosted by the Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion (CNAP) in partnership with the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, marks the University’s second annual celebration. Information on CalFresh, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, will be available.
“Food Day will bring awareness to the different issues affecting access to nutritious and affordable food and provide a forum for information and conversation,” said Alicia Bedore, community nutrition assistant, CNAP, and the event’s lead coordinator.

CNAP works closely with community agencies, public health departments, schools and farms providing youth and adults with cooking classes and nutrition education, physical activity and garden-based learning activities.
