FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
University Public Engagement
Inauguration festivities feature the theme of “Together, We Will,” a message Hutchinson has embraced since early in her presidential tenure at CSU, Chico. Hutchinson will express her commitment and dedication to the University’s founding principles, and affirm the purpose of CSU, Chico and the CSU—to make education possible for everyone. Her inaugural address and comments from invited guest speakers will reflect a message of unity while paying homage to the University’s long history and looking forward to the future.
Speakers include Joel Zimbelman, master of ceremonies and professor in the Department of Comparative Religion and Humanities; Durell B. Siplin, a teacher with the Chico Unified School District; Lynn M. Gangone, vice president for leadership programs at the American Council on Education; and Richard R. Rush, president emeritus at CSU, Channel Islands.
Hutchinson is the 12th president in the University’s 130-year history and its first female president. She was named president of Chico State in early March 2016, while serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at CSU, Channel Islands. She formally took office in July, replacing President Emeritus Paul Zingg.
Prior to the investiture ceremony, Hutchinson and White will speak and address questions from the media at a press conference from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. in Bell Memorial Union, Room 210. Media are also invited to attend the investiture ceremony and the reception that will follow on the Kendall Hall Lawn.
The foundation of Hutchinson’s higher education career was built here at CSU, Chico. She was first hired by the University in 1990 as a faculty member, teaching kinesiology with a specialty in teacher preparation. She later served as chair of the Department of Kinesiology, dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and chair of the University’s Academic Senate and senator of its statewide counterpart.
Prior to her service in the CSU, Hutchinson served as the principal investigator and co-director of the Northern California Physical Education Health Subject Matter Project and the project director for the Pacific Wellness Center. She also developed curriculum and taught physical education in elementary schools.
Hutchinson holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education teacher education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; a master’s from Teachers College, Columbia University in teaching analysis and curriculum development; and a doctorate of education from University of Massachusetts, Amherst in teacher education and staff development.
