Whether it takes the form of an attention-grabbing video game, a song a DJ uses to get bodies moving on the dance floor or a thrilling roller coaster ride, design plays a major role in everything around us. “Design Zone,” the Gateway Science Museum’s newest exhibit, explores what it takes to nail down that perfect design.

“Design Zone” invites visitors behind the scenes to explore how creative problem solvers—including video game developers, music producers and roller coaster designers—use math to achieve remarkable results. This interactive, hands-on exhibit allows visitors to explore a variety of creative concepts and learn the processes and tools needed to help create a successful design.

“Design Zone” includes three thematic zones, all highlighting the importance of science and mathematical thinking in areas critical to building creativity and innovation—art, music and engineering.

The Gateway Science Museum is also pleased to display two other new art exhibits.

Seen through the eyes of photographer Rich Turner, “Delta Grandeur” celebrates and shares the diversity of California’s Delta, an endangered ecosystem.

“Delta Grandeur” is being shown in the Newberry Gallery.

Showing in the Cornyn Gallery is “Our Ocean’s Edge.” Jasmine Swope’s black-and-white photography deftly captures the beautiful, otherworldly essence of California’s marine parks and the state’s coastline, which covers 1,100 miles.

While “Design Zone” focuses on innovative design from the hands of human beings, “our two [other] art exhibits underscore the beauty of design in the natural world,” said Gateway Science Museum Executive Director Renee Renner.

All three exhibits will be on display through May 7.

The creation of “Design Zone” was made possible by the generous support of the National Science Foundation. The exhibition was produced by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

The Gateway Science Museum is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and is located at 625 Esplanade. Museum admission is free for museum members, $7 for adults and $5 for children and students. For more information, please visit www.csuchico.edu/gateway or call 530-898-4121.
