Professor Michael Coyle Receives Professional Achievement Honors
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Coyle is a prolific researcher who seamlessly integrates his scholarly work with his teaching. He frequently writes and publishes with student researchers and has spent the last several years involving the community in justice issues through teaching and service. Currently on a one-year sabbatical, Coyle is tackling a challenging new research agenda on penal abolitionism and has already authored several pieces on the subject. In the last three years, he has also given six conference presentations and an invited lecturer presentation in Norway and completed a guest editorship for a special issue of the peer-reviewed journal Contemporary Justice Review.
Apart from his activities in research and teaching, Coyle has actively worked to connect the campus, the Chico community and the broader scholarly community around political justice issues. He has organized a panel of former prison inmates to address the campus community and served as director of the University’s Peace Institute, which presents speakers and activities addressing peace and war, social justice, sustainability, reconciliation and peace education. He has directed trips abroad for CSU, Chico students, faculty and community members; worked with local high schools to develop restorative justice practices; and advised a number of justice-themed student organizations on campus.
Coyle holds a doctorate in justice studies and a bachelor’s in religious studies from Arizona State University and a master’s in American studies from Harvard University.
He taught for six years at Arizona State University before joining the faculty at CSU, Chico in 2007.
He was honored at a campus reception last week hosted by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and the CSU, Chico Research Foundation. He may be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or 530-898-5692.
