Twenty educators from 19 different countries will be arriving at California State University, Chico next week for a five-week long study of the diverse facets of U.S. society and culture.

The professional development training program, which has been held in Chico in prior summers, is themed “Exploring Access and Equity in U.S. Education and Society.”  It is part of the Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for Secondary Educators, sponsored by U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), which is designed to promote mutual understanding among people of different nations.

CSU, Chico’s International Training Programs, part of the Office of International Education, is responsible for bringing the program to campus.

Among the countries sending educators to Chico next week are Croatia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Mexico, Tunisia, India, France, Cambodia and Greece.

The international participants include secondary school teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum developers and education ministry officials.

The group will arrive in Chico June 1 and depart June 28.  After leaving California, the educators will have shorter educational visits in Chicago and Washington, DC.

The participants will attend seminars conducted by CSU, Chico professors, area education professionals and community leaders. They will visit a number of facilities and organizations, such as Fair View High School in Chico and the Ability First Sports Camp. During the visit, the educators will conduct research related to their professional interests and present it before they leave Chico.

The program’s goals are that the educators return home with added knowledge about the United States and develop greater cultural understanding about people from different parts of the world.
